Air source heat pumps (ASHP's) represent a highly efficient system for space conditioning.  These systems have in recent years made some tremendous improvements not only to their efficiency but also their reliability.

Among the variety of air source heat pumps some now use variable refrigerant flow technology.  This is in reference to the compressor and refrigeration system.  Older compressors operated on an 'on or off' basis.  As compressor technology has improved multi stage systems have developed improving system efficiency.  Two of the systems using this new highly efficient technology are Daikin and Mitsubishi.

Air source heat pumps are being used to provide heating and cooling as the sole source of heat not only in the colder climates of the U.S. but also in Canada and many European countries.  As with anything else, it's a matter of being properly designed and properly installed.

Properly maintaining your air source heat pump will lower operating cost and protect the life of the equipment.  Be sure to have it checked for:

1. refrigerant pressures
2. cleanliness of filter and coil
3. check all electrical components
4. check operation of fan and compressor
